classic summer prints

It seems every season we invest in brand new trendy pieces that we always say we'll wear again and again, but somehow only last us through the season. However, in reality, a lot of trends and prints come back in style year after year, with a subtle twist. So I'm going to show you some classic summer prints that you should invest in, and if you already own these prints, you should break them out of your closet and put a 2015 spin on them.

A great way to make sure your pieces last season after season is to find ones in neutral and classic summer colours (for example, a white top with green palm trees on it), and/or classic cuts (an a line skirt or basic tee). But of course, don't be afraid to invest in a trendy piece here and there, like the colourful earrings below (#7)

Whether it's flowers or palm tree print or leaves, you can always count on a tropical print showing up for summer. Something about it just makes you feel like you're perpetually on a beach, in a hot climate, which is exactly how summer should be. Because a lot of a-line skirts are typically dressier, I love when I come across one that is of a flowy and laid back material so it can be worn for more a of a daytime look. A white thin cami would be so great with this skirt, and keeping most of the outfit in a white tone definitely makes the look so summery. Pair the outfit with sandals and a tote and you're ready to head out the door in no time.

Statement earrings are totally back in, and there are some really gorgeous ones out there right now. While you could definitely do a floral print dress for a dressier occasion, try keeping the stylish print subtly in your accessories. A classic black dress paired with these statement tropical earrings is the perfect look for a nighttime summer event. Feel free to add some colour in your other accessories as well, to play up the summer-iness. But definitely keep the rest of your jewellery dainty and simple so as not to talk away from the earrings.

Last summer I wrote a post about how pineapples were the fruit of 2014 in terms of print, and while those are still sticking around, the watermelon is definitely the fruit of 2015. I mentioned before how I love mixing prints, especially with a polka dot or striped skirt and printed tee, and I think this outfit is just so cutesy and adorable for something a little fancier in the daytime, whether for the office or a patio event.

For an easy-going weekend daytime look, I love this light romper with gladiator sandals. For those days when it's so hot and humid out, and you want to wear as minimal clothing as possible, I always opt for a romper or dress, as it is literally just one piece of clothing. And especially in a light fabric and look like this one, you can't go wrong. And since I'm really into the boho look this summer (who would've thought), I'm constantly choosing dainty gold pieces over my typical chunky silver ones.

2. Lord and Taylor
3. Casetify
4. Chicnova
5. Cape Codder
6. Thumbprintz
7. Corso Como
8. Abercrombie & Fitch

Nautical is more of a style than a print, but you can definitely find some pieces that do have nautical prints on them. This trend includes prints such as sailboats, anchors, and stripes, and sometimes polka dots if its done right. The colours used in this trend are mostly blue and white, as well as yellow, red, and sometimes brown (like a braided brown belt). For a quick outfit that's super simple and laid back, perhaps for a quick coffee date or summer school class, a jersey dress is such a good go-to.

I love a dressy pair of shorts, and going from my post a few week's back about wearing shorts and a blazer to work in the summer, I love these ones paired with a classic white blouse and navy or black blazer (a navy one might look a little too nautical for work).
