Robyn Styles Turns 1!

Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of Robyn Styles! I can't believe it's already been a whole year since I started blogging. I remember contemplating for a long time whether or not to start a blog, and to put my thoughts out there. Finally I told myself "just do it", and I'm so glad that I did. This has been such a great year of blogging and figuring out what I like, and even though I'm still discovering the world of fashion, writing, and blogging, Robyn Styles has definitely been an open door for all of
it.

But I could not have gotten through this year without my family and friends, who have supported me from the beginning. Thanks for sharing links, liking my status and posts, and most of all, for reading! I would also like to thank my sister, Elana, for taking all the photos for my outfit posts (more to come). And last but not least, I would like to thank you, my readers. I definitely could not have done any of this or gotten Robyn Styles to where it is today without you. Keep reading and stay awesome!

Maleficent

As a lover of all things Disney, especially the princesses, I was stoked to hear that a live action version (with real people) of Sleeping Beauty would be coming out, starring two women who were probably going to be perfect for the roles (Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie). But this version of the classic Disney fairy tale would be focused more on the villain, Maleficent, than the princess, and this just intrigued me even more (let's face it, villains are almost always more interesting). And if there's one thing you can count on when a movie like this hits theatres, it's that various stores and companies will be creating merchandise based around it! I can't wait to see Maleficent this weekend! In addition to the stuff below, you can also find handmade one-of-a-kind things on Etsy.

Weekend Highlights

This weekend was so relaxing and fun, I'm so sad for it to be over. But I'm optimistic about the fact that it is hopefully just one of the first of many awesome weekends to come this summer!

Friday night my dad and brother were out doing their own thing, which left my mom, sister, and I for a much needed girls night. I had just found these really cute super chunky sandals at Target earlier that day and couldn't wait to wear them. They gave me a very bohemian vibe, so I paired them with distressed boyfriend jeans, a black kimono and brown braided belt.

Our girls night actually turned into a girls day as well, and Saturday the three of us went for lunch and then to a flea market. I wore a pink tropical romper with white sneakers, and topped it off with a matching white denim jacket (though it was on and off the whole day, as the weather was absolutely beautiful!). That night I went for dinner with my parents downtown. I still wanted to keep on the romper but felt that the denim jacket and sneakers were too casual for a downtown dinner. So instead I opted for a black blazer and strappy black heels, added a black purse and beaded white necklace, and threw my hair up in a messy high ponytail. It was the perfect day-to-night look.

Sunday the weather was also so beautiful that I was finally able to soak up some sun rays in my backyard. I am definitely hoping to do a lot of that this summer!

Graffiti

There's a little underpass with some graffiti near my house, so my sister and I decided that would be a cool place for a little photo shoot. I wanted to keep the outfit sort of hipster and urban, and also very simple, hence the black and white theme.

This outfit also includes staple pieces that can be combined with other items to create endless outfits for almost any season.

Black Hat
I believe every girl should have one. They're perfect for topping off a somewhat plain outfit, and also act as a life saver on a bad hair day.

White T
Need I say more?

Black Skirt
This chiffon one is really great for the warmer months- I can pair almost anything with it. But I've also been known to add tights to my outfit in the cooler months if I just can't find a substitute for this skirt (it's one of my favourites).

Denim Jacket
These are so underrated. I'm really glad that denim jackets have been getting more of the credit they deserve lately (you can now find one in any colour in literally any store), but only a few years ago they were considered too 90s, so I'm really happy that trend came back!

What's In My Bag?

Satchel
This satchel I have from Call It Spring is one of my favourite bags to use no matter where I'm going. It's the perfect size for most outings, because it's able to fit all of what I've listed below, as well as sometimes more and sometimes less, depending on what my day holds. I didn't bother mentioning the obvious items, like wallet, phone, and iPod (though to some those last two are one in the same). Here is what's in my bag!

Sunglasses & Case
I literally always wear sunglasses. I have very sensitive eyes, and even in the winter, when the sky is so grey, I still feel a bit of a brightness and so I always need at least a bit of protection for my eyes. I also love these soft cases because they protect your sunglasses from getting scratched or bent, but they're also small enough to fit in even a clutch (I used to use those huge hard cases for my glasses and could literally never fit them in my purse).

Water Bottle
It's always essential that I carry water with me. I never know I'll be in desperate need to hydrate myself, and whether or not I'll have access to water when I'm out (convenience store, cafe, etc.). Water bottles like the one above are great because they're soft so they can fit in bags and purses that a hard water bottle can't, and when it's empty you can simply fold it up so it'll take up even less room. These bottles are also great for travelling and going on hikes (one of my favourite summer activities!).

MAC Studio Fix
This foundation is great for when you're doing your makeup in the morning, but also for doing little touch ups during the day. My skin is very oily and tends to get shiny as the day progresses, so this is always a good fix (pun intended). Speaking of oily skin, that brings me to my next item.

Oil Absorbing Sheets
These sheets are actually a life saver. Especially when I know I'm going to be out for the whole day (and won't have a chance to wash my face in between my day and night plans), these oil pads are what I put all my faith in.

Sugar Lip Treatment
I always carry some sort of lip balm on me, because my lips get very dry and cracked (especially in the winter). But I love this Sugar Lip Treatment from Sephora because it has a bit of a tint to it, while still doing everything I need a lip balm to do. It also has SPF 15, so it's great to wear in the summer when you're going to be out in the sun!

Magazine
You never know what kind of sitting and waiting your day will have in store for you (appointments, commuting, break time at work), so I absolutely ALWAYS like to have some sort of reading material with me. I'm a big reader so if I'm in the middle of a book I'll usually have that with me, but I'll also have a magazine, as they are great for even just skimming through when you have a few minutes.

Hand Lotion
Just like my lips, my hands tend to get very dry, so I always need to have hand lotion on me. The one in my bag usually ends up being whatever mini bottle from a hotel bathroom I stole, because they're so small the size is perfect for any kind of purse. But right now I'm loving Body Shop's Vitamin E Hand & Nail Treatment, because my nails are really fragile and tend to break about every other day. I just started using this one from Body Shop, but I'm hoping it'll help!

Nail File
As I just mentioned above, my nails really do break a lot. I like to keep them long, and so they are always hitting and smashing into things, especially at work. Nothing is worse than breaking a nail and then not being able to file down the rough edge, and making the nail even, so I always like to have a nail file with me.

Pack It Up

I never would have thought that something so associated with school and academics could become such a fashion trend. It just goes to show that you may never understand fashion or be able to predict it. And even when I first saw this trend I also never thought I would be one to give into it; I just really couldn't wrap my head around it. But there is definitely a new spin on these bags that the ones we used to use in high school didn't have: chicness and sophistication.

You could find a backpack for pretty much any occasion, because of the different materials, styles, and colours they come in. I especially love the leather or faux leather ones, as I feel that they just complete the bag and the look. Here are some of my faves!

Weekend Highlights

This past week was one of the most hectic weeks I've had in a while. I started my spring course for school (my last credit!) and also wrote my first post for Toronto City Gossip, a local online publication that brings you entertainment, fashion, food and more. I was so excited to begin writing for their Fashion section! So of course, because of my crazy busy week, I was hoping to catch a break on the weekend and just completely relax. But of course, that didn't happen. Not that I'm complaining though, because this weekend was filled with fun, family, and friends.

Friday night I got to catch up with some old friends, some of whom I haven't seen in a while, for a friend's birthday. Then Saturday night my grandfather took my family out for dinner for my mom's birthday (which if you recall was actually in April, but unfortunately he wasn't able to attend the dinner on her actual birthday). I wore black shorts and a blazer with bright blue accents.

Shorts: Dynamite
Necklace: H&M

Then of course Sunday was Mother's Day! We started off the day by going to the cemetery to visit my dad's mom, as we do every Mother's Day (as well as the Jewish high holidays). Then we had my mom's side of the family over for lunch, where we got to spend time with everyone, eat delicious food, and open presents.

My brother, sister, and I got my mom a little package from The Body Shop, that included a little loofa, shower gel, body scrub, soap, and lotion in the scent of Shea butter (yum!). The Body Shop also had these individual seaweed face masks, so we grabbed 3 for my mom, my sister and I to all do and spend some girl time together!

I decided to wear a light pink dress, an item I was able to successfully cross off my Spring Wish List. It was perfect for Mother's Day, partly because of the colour (so girly) and partly because the weather was so beautiful, I was finally able to wear a sleeveless dress!

Met Gala: Best Looks

The 2014 Met Gala took place on Monday night, and I don't know about you but I loved going through the red carpet photos from the night. Nothing gets me in the New York glamour mood like looking through photos of a huge New York event, and the Met Gala is no exception. This year the theme was White Tie and adornment. Here are some of my favourite looks from the evening.

Not only am I in love with this couple because I am a nerd and love Spiderman, but they are just so adorable and beautiful together, I can't help but love them in real life and on screen. Not all (or many) red heads can pull off pink, but Emma Stone was able to look absolutely gorgeous in two different shades of the colour. I also am a huge fan of her Elsa-esque hairdo. And of course Andrew Garfield looks dashing as always in a metallic grey jacket.

Emma Stone: Thakoon
Andrew Garfield: Band of Outsiders

The ever fabulous Sarah Jessica Parker looked Ã¼ber formal in an Oscar de la Renta black and white gown and white gloves.

Solange Knowles showed off her new pixie cut (which looks just as amazing on her as her wild curls), in a peach-coloured knee length dress. I am absolutely obsessed with this colour in general, as it is very trendy for spring, and it also looks great with her skin tone. Amongst some of the other colours for the evening, Solange definitely stood out.

Solange Knowles: 3.1 Phillip Lim

Though one of a few women not in a gown, Cara Delevigne looks absolutely killer in this black and white combo (although who are we kidding, she looks good in just about anything no matter the occasion).

Cara Delevigne: Stella McCartney

There have been many occasions where Lena Dunham has looked less than fabulous, and it was mostly due to some combination of not being the right colour and/or silhouette for her. But I was so pleased to see that she really owned this dress on Monday night, and I don't think anyone else could have pulled it off quite as well. The shape of the dress (high-low) really flattered her, and the floral embellishments were just so playfully her.

Lena Dunham: Giambattista Valli Couture

Here are some more of my favourite looks from this year's Gala. What were your favourites?

Marion Cottilard: Christian Dior Couture

Taylor Swift: Oscar de la Renta

Chloë Grace Moretz: Chanel Couture

Karolina Kurkova: Marchesa

Emmy Rossum: Carolina Herrera

Amber Heard: Giambattista Valli Couture

Greta Gerwig: Theory by Oliver Theyskens

Suki Waterhouse: Burberry

Jessica Alba: Diane von Furstenburg

Blake Lively: Gucci Premiere
Ryan Reynolds: Gucci
