statement coats

Layering up and staying warm in the winter is very tricky. You don't want to look too puffy (like Joey in that episode of Friends), but especially in Canadian winters, you need definitely need to keep warm. The struggle really sets in when you want to find a functional coat in a nice, statement hue, but the puffy parkas are only available in greys and blacks. (You can never go wrong with a grey or black coat, but let's face it, those colours don't exactly make a statement now do they?) We also spend most of our winter time in our coats, so why not stand out, even in your million layers?

Investing in a statement coat for the season shouldn't have to be a hard decision; I purchase a new colour coat pretty much every fall. But if you're worried that you won't know how to wear a standout topper for every occasion, I'm here to show you how to wear your statement coat this winter; dressy for the Holidays, and more casual for an everyday look.

Pink is the new black. I really believe it is. Pink is showing up everywhere. I did a post a while ago about how it used to just be reserved for spring and Easter time, but pink (especially light pink) has become quite a year-round colour. Which I am totally thrilled about. Edge it up with a  studded skirt for work, while being super feminine for a dressy holiday party.

I'm sure it's no surprise this colour was included in this post. Not only am I so in love with the colour purple, but because it's also super on trend for this fall/winter season, I wanted to include it and talk about purple coats. I love a very light purple for a coat, when it'a almost grey; it acts as somewhat of a neutral colour, so it's perfect for pairing with any outfit you wear this season. But you also get that little pop of colour which is great, especially if you're looking for a statement coat. Plus I love pastels in the winter; they look so beautiful against the white snow, and if it's a grey day, they lighten it up. I love this all grey look, with pops of black for the office, and then an edgey feather dress for a fancy party.

To me, nothing says "Holidays" more than red. Especially in this hue, you'll be ready for the Holiday season in no time. Pair it with a subtle black and grey colour palette for Holiday shopping during the day, and then an of-white skirt and black top for a conservative family dinner look.

And of course, I always love a white coat, especially in the winter. But to make a statement, invest in one that has a little extra touch, like a fur trim collar. To me, white is a very sophisticated colour to wear in a coat, and especially in a fur style, you'll want to have the rest of your outfit match. Wear it with wide leg pants, a conservative turtleneck, and a deep lip for daytime, and  pair of flowy pants for a holiday party. This red/magenta colour is gorgeous for the holidays, without being too red.
